SHSAT
● The SHSAT determines admission to NYC’s specialized high schools, which focus on advanced academics, STEM, humanities, and more.
● The test is available to:
- 8th graders seeking admission for 9th grade.
- 9th graders seeking admission for 10th grade (limited seats available).

- Bronx High School of Science
- Brooklyn Technical High School
- Queens High School for the Sciences at York College
- High School of American Studies at Lehman College
- Brooklyn Latin School
- Staten Island Technical High School
- High School for Math, Science, and Engineering at City College
Test Format
The SHSAT has two main sections:
1. English Language Arts (ELA)
- Reading Comprehension: Multiple-choice questions based on narrative, informational, and persuasive texts.
- Revising/Editing: Questions that test grammar, organization, and sentence structure.
2. Mathematics
- Topics include arithmetic, algebra, geometry, probability, and word problems.
- No calculator is allowed.
Group courses are taught in conjunction with the HSPT, TACHS and SHSAT with the SHSAT being the primary focus due to the content being more rigorous for this exam.
Skills Development
Understanding Main Ideas: Identify the central idea of a passage.
- Detail Recognition: Locate and interpret supporting details or evidence.
- Inference Making: Read between the lines to draw conclusions not explicitly stated.
- Author's Purpose: Understand why the author wrote the passage and the intended audience.
- Tone and Mood: Recognize the emotional undertone of the text.
- Vocabulary in Context: Determine the meaning of words based on how they're used in the passage.
- Summarization: Condense information into concise summaries
Grammar and Syntax: Identify and correct grammatical errors (e.g., subject-verb agreement, tense consistency).
- Sentence Clarity: Improve unclear or awkwardly worded sentences.
- Punctuation and Mechanics: Correct issues with commas, periods, and other punctuation marks.
- Logical Flow: Rearrange or combine sentences for better organization and coherence.
- Redundancy and Wordiness: Eliminate unnecessary repetition or overly complex wording.
- Contextual Clues: Use context to revise or clarify meaning effectively.
- Arithmetic and Number Sense
- Basic Operations: Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
- Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages: Conversions and calculations.
- Ratios and Proportions: Solve problems involving proportional relationships.
- Absolute Value: Interpret and calculate absolute values.
- Algebra
- Equations and Inequalities: Solve linear equations and inequalities.
- Expressions: Simplify and evaluate algebraic expressions.

- Exponents and Roots: Apply laws of exponents and calculate square roots.

- Data Analysis and Probability
- Interpreting Graphs and Tables: Read and analyze bar graphs, line graphs, and data tables.
- Probability: Solve basic probability problems.
- Statistics: Work with mean, median, mode, and range.
- Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking
- Multi-Step Problems: Break down complex problems into manageable steps.
- Logical Reasoning: Apply logic to find patterns or eliminate incorrect answers.
